Put Your Happy Feet on and Celebrate International Penguins day at SAMREC

Penguin Day 2013

International Penguins day is celebrated worldwide on the 25th April each year. This marks the annual migration of penguins to the north. Penguins are found in Antarctica, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, the Falkland Islands and the Galapagos Islands. Elsewhere, they are only found in zoos. SAMREC situated in Port Elizabeth along Marine Drive is a rehabilitation and education centre for penguins and birdlife. With St Croix Island just off Nelson Mandela Bay now been the largest breeding colony in the world, the community is invited to join in the celebrations by participating in the Happy Feet 5km Fun Run fundraiser that will take place at SAMREC in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve on the 20th April 2013. SAMREC – SA Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre

samrec

The South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) is a non-profit organisation that was formed in 2000 to care for sick and injured African penguins. The vulnerability of the penguins was recognised when the new port of Ngqura (Coega) was built allowing ships to now sail right past the breeding colony at St Croix Island. Although pollution is strictly monitored there are other factors that have contributed to the decline in numbers of the African penguin and our marine life in general. SAMREC has since spread their wings and is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating a wide variety of our marine life as well as informing and educating the public through various tours and guided hikes. This Christmas time though, you can help support a less fortunate child by buying them a small gift. In a unique partnership, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) and Holmeleigh Farm Yard will be hosting a Christmas party for these special children from various children’s homes and orphanages in Nelson Mandela Bay on 19th of December 2012. Blunden Coaches have also been kind enough to sponsor the transportation of the children from the three selected homes to Holmeleigh Farm Yard, where the children will enjoy a wonderful party held in their

Thabisa Dube… little PE legend!

Afrika Tikkun 94.7 cycle challenge Thabisa Dube

Initially Thabisa put pedal to the metal on her bicycle to raise R21 600.00 this enabled 10 children to be sent to pre-school, she has now reached a whopping R30 000.00 meaning at least 14 children will now have the opportunity to attend school – and there is no stopping her there - this awesome little Grade 2 Theodor Herzl Primary School pupil is now raising money for the Afrika Tikkun initiative.
