Port Elizabeth’s Dance Festival takes to the stages this week for the second set. Dancers from fourteen local dance studios, one studio from Cradock, one from George and one from Knysna have entered the 2012 festival. They will all participate in the genres of Modern, Hip Hop, Tap, Spanish, Irish, National and classical ballet dance.

The Ballet, Spanish and National section of the festival starts on Wednesday 22nd August with daily sessions through till 28th August at 12:30 and 18:00 daily, and moves to the Opera House for the Senior work from Wednesday 29th till Friday 31st August. Ten dancers are competing in the Ballet Junior Championship which is danced at the Savoy Theatre on Saturday 25th August and 12 dancers competing in the Senior Ballet Championship section on Thursday 30th August at the Opera House. The final night of the festival includes a prize giving ceremony where children receive trophies and medals for outstanding performances.

Expect solos, duets, trios, and group dances at all sessions with toe-tapping tunes and titles such as Let’s Move, Dance It Up, Under the Sea,  Brighter than the Sun, Oh You Beautiful Doll and Burlesque progressing on to the more classical genre of Pas Romantique, The Lilac Fairy solo from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty and Only A Memory.

Tickets for the Savoy Theatre are available at the door. Tix for the Opera House can be booked through Computicket.
